New Benchmark for Integrated Behavioral Health Care
“In designing this building, our focus was on creating a welcoming and safe environment to promote healing and recovery,” says Cindy Hecker, CEO at UW Medical Center.

Totaling 184,000 SF, this design-build teaching facility is located at the UW Northwest Campus and stands as a forward-thinking solution to the mental health crisis, increasing capacity for patients and critical workforce training. The six-story patient-centered facility adds 150 patient beds designed specifically for patients facing both acute mental health and acute medical concerns. Additionally, this facility contains a neuromodulation suite serving both inpatient and outpatient needs and telepsychiatry consultation rooms. Offices and workrooms are also located within the facility to support graduate medical education. These are multi-use conference spaces with food services including kitchen, and server dining spaces to support the entire UWMC Northwest campus.

24%

diverse business utilization (goal 20%)

17,000

hours of fabrication labor

This ultra collaborative delivery model featured shared risk/reward partnerships with over a dozen companies.

Exceeded diverse business participation goals

VECA focused on finding companies that could have meaningful roles on the project, and an intensive outreach effort with personal communication helped beat goals by nearly 4%.

BIM360 approvals maximized coordination

To bridge gaps between the VDC team and onsite constructability constraints, our team uses a multi-level review and approval process that incorporates input from the field prior to fabrication production, reducing onsite installation issues.

Close collaboration with end user groups

To help determine the right balance of robust options with simple, effective solutions, VECA utilized box walks, mock ups, and thoughtful conversations with end users.

Significant Technologies scope and installation

Installation included CAT6A cabling along with fiber/copper backbone and multiple IDF/E-IDF buildouts, OSP campus fiber tie-ins, as well as DAS / Sound Masking systems.
